Speaking of getting a 'close relationship' with the God of The Bible, as in ANY relationship, the first thing to do, is to:
LEARN ABOUT the other person. In this case, God. (John 17:3)
There are several ways to do this:
1. Look at his accomplishments. Look around in the natural world thoughtfully (Romans 1:20).....The beauty and the power of the heavens, the stars and planets(Psalm 8:3), the natural cycles (Job 36:27, 28; Ecclesiastes 1:7; Isaiah 55:10), the make-up of all living things(Psalm 139:16), the complexity, the harmony, the LOVE that went into making these things....and ask ourselves, what do they teach me about the creator?
2. Get to know his thoughts, read his letters to you. Look into the Bible, God's Word (Hebrews 4:12). It's like a letter from God to his earthly creation, explaining where we came from, the reason we're here, why there are so many problems on the earth, and what our future holds. The Old and New Testaments both tell us about God, who he is, what he wants from us, and they provide comfort and hope for those who are sighing and groaning over the terrible things happening around us today.(Romans 15:4) A sincere study of the Bible shows that you CAN get close to God. (Acts 17:26-28) He is a God of love (1 John 4:8) (John 3:16)who is warm, kind and approachable and he invites us to develop a close relationship with him.-Isaiah 1:18.
Again, as in any relationship, after you've observed the person, and gotten to know their likes and dislikes, and want to know them better, you would
3. Speak to him... spend time with him, have conversations. IN God's case, this would be through prayer (James 1:5)(Philippians 4:6&7)(1 Thessalonians 5:17)
As you learn to appreciate and love this new friend, you don't want to do anything to hurt them (Galatians 5:19-21)(1 Corinthians 6:9-11), so you would try to:
4. Be the best friend you can be. The Bible tells us the kind of people God is looking for to worship him: Psalm 15:1-5 and John 4:24, and then notice and acknowledge when God has been a 'best friend' to YOU, too.(Psalm 94:18 & 19)
AS we get to know him, we learn many MANY ways to build an ever growing relationship with him, as our heavenly father. ( James 4:1-17)(Matthew 7:21-23)
