All you have to do is to go to the Radio Tower in goldenrod city and defeat all the Team Rocket members and the director then you will be able to enter.. after that all you haft to know is whirlpool an then you will be in black thorn.

When I played my game, no one was blocking the gym door. However, someone was right beside it. Perhaps you game has a glitch.
If you used any kind of cheats and ran past the man selling RageCandyBars in Mahogany Town without him letting you get past (i.e.: you ran through him/around him using a Walk Through cheat), then that may also be the cause. To fix the problem, try heading back to Goldenrod City and beating Team Rocket and its executives, which all are in the Radio Tower.
