The 8th gym uses ground and fighting type Pokemon such as Rhyhorn and Machoke. You should train up water, grass and flying types for the gym. For grass Pokemon train them fighting the trainers between Cinnibar Island and Pallet Town. Most of the trainers there will be using water Pokemon. For water and flying Pokemon, since you will have beaten the 7th gym by now, you can train on One Island, fighting the wild fire and fighting Pokemon there and also the trainers.

What you need to do is go to the one on cinabar island, which is your seventh gym, and then go into Pokemon mansion. Go to the top and then you will see two edges that look like they were riped off. Go to the one closer then the other and walk off it. Then go to the basemant. If you are having problems with the doors, then you go to the statues and click A at them. As you are in the Basement, go to the far end and you will find the Secret Key. This will get you into cinabar. Then you are okay after you beat him, to go to the gym in viridian city.
