Sometimes it is the dramatic things in life that inspire us. The dramatic things are not always bad... marriage, birth, a great new job... these things can inspire as well... but yes, sometimes it is the dramatically bad that gives us the impetus to write. ... but that doesn't mean that we can only write when we are inspired in this way. Sometimes the very act of writing can inspire us to write further or think more deeply... rather than the other way around. You do not need to be miserable to write well... that is just a feeling that you get where you want to pour all of that internal stuff onto paper... and that can inspire you to write really good things, or utter trash.
Good writing just takes deep thought and consistency... writing no matter what mood you are in, and being able to follow an idea or a plot line to its conclusion. Often, when we are writing out of pure misery, we'll write up to a certain point and then lose the thought, or not want to deal with it and move on to something else... so you need to be able to write in any mood to be a good writer... even if you are more "inspired" when miserable.
