It depends on the nickname you are referring to. Alaska has several

"The Great Land"- Which is what Alaska means in Native Alaskan ( I forget which languange, I think Athabascan)

"The Last Frontier"- Which is the state motto, since it was one of the last states to be brought into the US union and last of the gold rush states.

I've also heard "The Great White North" which I'm sure is referring to all the snow and glaciers.

There's a few others but I can't think of them off hand.

That it served as a port of anchor is the way in which Anchorage, Alaska, got its name. Anchorage owes its development to its usefulness -- not as a fishing or mining center -- as a port of anchor for the railroad-building activities of the Alaska Engineering Commission in 1914.

Alaska is far enough north that during the summer months, the sun does not set the entire way. In the northern regions, the sun will actually stay above the horizon for months, so that at midnight, the sun is still shining, hence, the land of the midnight sun.

Alaska has two popular nicknames although neither are official. The land of the midnight sun can be drawn from the fact that in the summer the sun does't fully set in Alaska. This phenomenon is due to the state northern location near the arctic. Alaska is also called the Last Frontier, for all the opportunities it presented with its gold and oil.
