Cause he got into a duel with some dude who insulted his wife and he wore a big coat to the duel. He stood sideways, and when the guy shot his gun, it was hard to tell where Jackson was in the huge coat he was wearing. The bullet caught him under the arm pit and went into his lung. Then, he steadied himself, took aim, and plugged the guy.
So he could actually say he took a bullet for his wife.
