If you mean the industrial revolution in Britain(19th century, the way of life was not changed dramatically, but very subtly. The average income among the working class was higher and people didn't freeze to death in the winter (burning coal). Economically, this made Britain (and subsequently the British Empire) the most powerful nation in the world. It meant our military was more advanced, we could produce and manufacture things more complex and/or more quickly and generally boosted our economy. But, as shown by the decline of the car industry in Britain. Because we were the first to industrialise, when other countries industrialised they had more advanced factories, technology and we lost our advantages. So now we generally have our economy from the tertiary sector (correct me if I'm wrong).
Hope this helps :)
