Director Raoul Walsh suggested the name of John Wayne to Fox Film Corporation Executive Winfield Sheehan. Walsh had originally put forward the name Anthony Wayne, but this was rejected by Sheehan.

∙ 12y agoHe was given the lead role as a tough-guy trail boss in the major 1930 western, The Big Trail . Not surprisingly, director Raoul Walsh felt "Marion Morrison" would not be a good marquee name for that character. Walsh thus suggested "Anthony Wayne" -- a famous American general -- as a stage name. Producer Winfield Sheehan felt that the name "Anthony" was "too Italian," and so Walsh decided on "John."

John Wayne's first movie appearance was not in a western. He is first seen in the movie "Brown of Harvard" in 1926; in which he plays a football player and has no speaking part. His first Western role was in "The Big Trail" (1930) but his breakout role was nine years later in John Ford's "Stagecoach" (1939), the movie which made him a box-office star.
