How did Steve Jobs come up with the idea for the iPhone?

The iPhone was developed by a team of engineers and designers at Apple. Its origins date back to the Newton MessagePad that Apple made in 1993. Apple were investigating the use of a touch screen on a tablet like device but did not consider it good enough to market. They realised that what they had developed could be implemented in a mobile/cell phone. With the knowledge gained from work on the iPods, particularly their synchronisation with the iTunes software, Apple had all the pieces to put together the iPhone which they launched in 2007. With the experience gained from the development of the iPhone they were able to return to the abandoned tablet project and developed the iPad.
