Walt Disney came up with Mickey Mouse after losing the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Charles Mintz. He took a train back to California, where he and Ub Iwerks came up with a mouse character inspired by Walt's pet mouse. Walt originally decided to name him "Mortimer", but his wife, Lillian, suggested "Mickey". There, Mickey Mouse was born.

Walt Disney started drawing a bunch of circles until it became the form of a mouse. He asked his wife if she like the name "Mortimer Mouse". She said, "How about Mickey?" And thus, Mickey was born!

Well, it didn't begin with Mickey. When Walt took his daughters to an amusement park, he saw how much they enjoyed it and how much he liked seeing people happy. He thought of Disneyland in the park on a bench. That bench is displayed at Disneyland itself to this day.

Anyways, Walt needed an icon or a character to represent Disneyland. At first, his decision WASN'T Mickey. It was Mortimer. Yes, Mortimer the mouse. But you know who stopped him? His wife. Walt's wife Lillian, was the one to change it all. She told him that she didn't approve of that name and told him to change it to Mickey Mouse. He liked that idea. And thus, Mickey Mouse was born. And his first film was Steamboat Willie. So technically, it wasn't Walt to think of Mickey. It was Lillian Disney.

The Walt Disney Company celebrates his birth as November 18, 1928 upon the release of Steamboat Willie,[2] although Mickey had already appeared six months earlier in Plane Crazy (Steamboat Willie being the first Mickey Mouse Cartoon with sound). Is Mickey Mouse the main character of Disney?

The first Mickey mouse cartoons did not come out until 1928. He became very famous after that because of Steamboat Willie being the first cartoon with sound. So therefore, yes, he was famous during the 20's but not until the late 1920's.
