The first national Fair Employment Act, FDR's Executive order 8802, addressed racial discrimination in the defense industry.

Following the War, President Truman ordered the desegregation of the US Military in 1948, with the last all-black units being disbanded in 1954.

These orders led to increased pressure for the elimination of separate-but-equal as a valid social arrangement. But this change did not occur nationally for another 19 years, with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
