After Germany surrendered in May 1945, but before the war was over completely with the surrender of Japan in August 1945, there was an election in Britain in July 1945. After five years of amazing, inspirational war leadership, looked to not only by British people but by Americans and millions around the globe, Churchill was defeated and turned out of office by the grateful people of Britain, who voted in a Labor Party government. Within a few years they had a welfare state and the Empire was over. Churchill did briefly return, for a year or two, to the office of Prime Minister in the early 50s, and died in 1964.
