∙ 13y agoWorld of Warcraft is basically an extension of the storyline from the old Warcraft real-time strategy game series. In Warcraft 3 there already was a special campaign where you gather heroes and do quests for various NPCs, and it seems that this was used as a teaser for WoW or a test to see how it was received.
Blizzard Entertainment then launched World of Warcraft, which we now refer to as "classic". Compared to now the game was much less polished and slick, but as it gained in popularity and generated more revenue, additional raids, options and features were added.
Currently, patch 4.0.3 and 4.0.3a represent a complete overhaul of the game world and its game systems as it was from classic. Receptions so far seem positive, although some people find it hard to adapt to the latest changes.
