Well the water isn't red all the time but sometimes it can appear to be. It got its name from a phenomenon caused by an algae called Trichodesmium Erythraeum. When the algae blooms dies off, the blue/green color of the sea appear to be redish/brownish.
Its banks are very red and the people there were called the red people.
It got it's name because it is very salty and almost has no kind of life in it(same reason it is called the dead sea).
