to make the supreme court more conservative
It became more conservative-apex
Presidents Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush nominated a total of eight justices during their terms of office, all, with the exception of David Souter and (sometimes) Anthony Kennedy, very conservative in their political and ideological leanings.
Of the eight Justices:
With the except of President George HW Bush's appointment of Justice David H. Souter, in 1990, all three Presidents placed conservative justices on the bench, frequently replacing more moderate or progressive justices. Anthony Kennedy is the most moderate of those still sitting; Justices Thomas, Scalia, Alito and Chief Justice Roberts are decidedly conservative.
These appointments continued the trend of shifting the Supreme Court from its progressive stance under Chief Justice Earl Warren, to moderate under Warren Burger, to conservative under William H. Rehnquist. The Roberts Court is likely to be conservative for many years to come, unless one or more conservatives seats become vacant while a progressive President and Senate are in control.
Together, the three Presidents (Reagan, Bush, Sr., and Bush, Jr.) continued the trend toward composing a more conservative, business-sympathetic Court by replacing retiring liberal and moderate justices with more conservative justices. Not all of these Presidents' appointments should be viewed as far-right; however, Justice Kennedy is the last remaining moderate-conservative on the bench.
At present, five of the seven appointments these Presidents made remain on the Court. When they vote as a bloc, as often happens, they control the majority. Their decisions tend to favor corporate interests over individual rights, and to restrict certain liberties previously enjoyed by society.
