During the renaissance, the art was more detailed and more related to nature as opposed to religion. The paintings became more detailed and life-like. The Mona Lisa was a very early example of this. It definitely would have inspired other artists... that's all I can think of.

There are a lot of memorable paintings done during the Renaissance times as there are many famous artists. But, the Mona Lisa can be called the painting of the Renaissance for a couple of reasons.

First, if you think of the iconic status of the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa is indisputably the most recognized painting in the whole word (thus it's iconic status).

Secondly, if you think about the paintings of the Renaissance period, pretty much all portraits were done showing the serious profile of the sitter. The Mona Lisa is almost facing you and she is smiling. Also, if you look at the portrait, it really truly seems that she is a living breathing person standing right in front of you. Because the portrait is a little faded and dark because of the elements and time, it is a little harder to see that effect on it nowadays.

The Mona Lisa was an unknown lady some people think it was Leonardo da vinci as a girl. But it fit into the renaissance because it was in a strict 3D view of her. You saw a women not a women all over the place. It was a "realistic painting." A relistic painting is something that is of real character. The woman was because she was drawn real.
