If I can remember correctly it was because the Vikings (vandals I believe) needed basic supplies such as food, water, wealth, and land. It wasn't uncommon for people to invade in these time and in some ways its always been a way of life. In the end the Vikings just end up destroying the village. I cant be certain because I just got done learning this from my teacher... so if this is wrong its not my fault.

There is a controversy as to whether the Viking established the Kievan Rus'. At its greatest extent, in the mid-11th century, this medieval state stretched River Vistula in the west (in Poland) in the west and from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south. It united the majority of East Slavic tribes. The modern peoples of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia all claim Kievan Rus' as their cultural inheritance. The controversy is about whether the Rus were slaves or Varangians. This was a name for the Vikings used by Greeks and the Eastern Slavs. Ukrainian nationalist historians argue that the Rus were Slavs. The Viking theory argues that the Vikings ruled the Kievan Rus' between the 9th and 11th centuries ruled the medieval state of Rus. Rurik settled he Vikings in Novgorod in 862. Rurik's relative Oleg conquered Kiev in 882 and established the state of Kievan Rus'.

One Grand Prince of Kiev, Vladimir the Great, used was forced to flee to Scandinavia by his brother. He used Viking mercenaries to reconquer the Kievan Rus (978). Another grand Prince, also used Viking mercenaries to defeat his brothers and seize power (1019),

Byzantine missionaries spread Orthodox Christianity to Russia. Vladimir the Great adopted Orthodox Christianity as the official religion of the Kievan Rus in exchange for marrying into the Byzantine imperial family.
