For the most part, girls were not allowed to be knights. I can think of one exception, Joan of Arc, a young french girl who fought wars, was burned at the stake, and became a saint. Kights were from noble familys.

Not unless she was born into a noble family. If she was peasant or serf that is where she stayed.

Generally, the above was true. There were exceptions, however, such as Theodora, who was the daughter of a bear trainer and a dancer, and who started out life as a dancer and actress herself. She became the Empress of the Byzantine Empire, and was one of the most powerful figures of her time.

Another example can be seen in the women of Tortosa, a town in Catalonia. There was a battle there, in which the women of the town, acting on their own, attacked and routed an enemy army. They were all made knights. They were freed from all taxation, and given the right to lead processions, to speak before the men in public assemblies, and to be treated in all other respects in a manner befitting of their rank.
