There are four main forces that must be applied to an aircraft in order for it to fly.

1) Thrust- forward motion created by an engine of an aircraft

2) Lift- forces that act 90 degrees to the wings which lifts the aircraft

3) Drag- the resistance an aircraft experiences as it moves through the air. This is produced by the lifting surfaces on the aircraft such as the wings and tail.

4) Weight- force of gravity acting on the aircraft

Each of these forces impacts the way an aircraft flies. A great way to see how lift is created by air flowing above and below a wing:

Take a piece of regular paper (computer paper, loose leaf)

Firmly hold the two corners of the paper closest to you.

Raise the paper directly in front of your mouth

Take a deep breath, and blow as hard as you can under the paper.

The paper should rise.

Now take another deep breath and blow as hard as you can across the top of the paper. Make sure your airflow goes directly across the top of the paper.

What happen?

Scientists make it seem like they no everything but really noone knows how airplanes fly. I the jets on the back push them forward. Its either that or pixie dust :)

As it accelerates down the runway the wings create lift. Once the lift from the wings equals the weight of the plane the pilot rotates and the plane is airborne.
