On a pre-recorded DVD, the digital information is coded by microscopic pits (dents) in a metal foil disc. The data is recorded in a spiral pattern and read from the centre, outward, while the disc spins. The metal foil is encased in clear plastic to protect it but make it visible.
The foil discs can be mass produced, by a simple stamping process, after a master disc has been made.
To play it back, the disc is spun and a laser light shone onto the disc. The reflected light is picked up by the optics that contain the laser. The light is detected by a photo transistor or diode. The fluctuations caused by the pits are read as binary code and converted into an electrical signal. The signal is processed by a computer and converted from the binary, into sound and video.
A computer also controls the speed of the spin motor, the focusing of the optics and the track of the laser lens across the disc.
