In a Bowling league, the team that has fewer players is given one or more imaginary teammates called a vacancy (or sometimes a blind, though technically this refers to an actual teammate who happens to be absent that day). Then a fair handicap can be calculated, based in part on the score assigned to the vacant player(s).
