An electrical contactor works like a remote switch, usually to switch higher voltage/current circuits. A contactor has a set of normally open and/or normally closed contacts. When you energize the coil(s) within the contactor (with a control voltage/signal) the contacts are pulled in magnetically and either complete or open the circuit they are switching. Ex: You would probably need several circuits to cover all the lighting needed in a large parking lot. You could use a lighting contactor with several sets of normally open contacts, (1) for each circuit. Then you could use a pushbutton to supply a control voltage to the contactor. When you push the button the coil(s) are energized, the contacts are pulled in and all the lighting circuits will turn on at the same time; instead of using many switches.
