Extrusive rocks are igneous rocks that form when a volcano erupts on Earth's surface. Intrusive rocks form from the cooling of magma below the surface. Extrusive rocks usually have smaller crystals than intrusive rocks, because extrusive rocks have less time to crystallize. They are suddenly in contact with much cooler air than the extreme temperatures of inside the earth. A way to remember this is relating intrusive and extrusive to the words interior and exterior. Extrusive forms outside the earth, and exterior means outside. Intrusive rock forms inside the earth, and interior means inside.
