I just recently had this same question come up. I don't know if it is the same with all airlines, but according to US Air, it is mile-for-mile. I think it may have been different in the past, but that is what I was told by US Air

Frequent flyer miles are basically just points that you get for flying. Before you fly you have to open a frequent flyer account with the airline (or a partner airline). In most cases if you open an account online, they will tell you your account number immediately. They will also mail you a card. Present this card at the time of check-in and after you have flown your points (miles) will be credited to your account.

You can also earn miles by using the services of partners of this airline. The list of partners will be available on the website of the airline. Examples of partners are hotels, car rentals, DVD rentals, and many other retailers.

Almost all airlines now issue credit cards. These earn miles on purchases. Usually one mile per dollar.

You can redeem the miles for free airline tickets or upgrades. Free airline tickets usually start around 30,000 miles. Also you can redeem miles for merchandise.

The linked article gives more information about how to earn frequent flyer miles.

You can join most frequent flyer programs on the airline's web site.

Having done that, you apply for the miles themselves in one of two ways:

1. Give the airline your frequent flyer number before you fly. (You can enter it on most ticket booking sites, including of course the airline's own.)

2. Fill out a "missing mileage" form on the airline's Web site after you fly.

The result is the same either way, but the second delays things and is more hassle.

You do not have to be a member of the airline's own program to earn miles for a flight. Most major airlines are members of an alliance with other airlines. You can join one program in the alliance and earn miles for flights with all member airlines. A few restrictions apply, such as deep-discount tickets on one airline not necessarily earning miles, or earning only a small number of miles, with some of its partners. Check the individual airline's site for its rules to avoid disappointment later.

1. Many airlines send printed statements to members of their frequent flyer programs. These are typically sent monthly if there is any activity; less often or not at all if there is not.

2. Many airlines send the same information by e-mail to those who set up a preference for that medium in their profile. These typically come monthly even if there's no activity, since it doesn't cost the airline anything to send them.

3. If you register on the airline's Web site and get a password, you can generally get the information there. This will be more up to date than a printed statement.

4.If you're not registered to access their Web site, you can call. An agent can look up the information and tell you. Some airlines also have automated answering systems for this, but those have gone out of style with increased popularity and availability of the Web.

Frequent traveler travel for leisure or business What is their airline preferences What is most important when they book a trip price or schedule Do they belong to any frequent flyer clubs.?

Frequent travelers typically are members of one or two frequent flyer clubs. They try to minimize the number of airlines that they use so as to easily and quickly accrue large amounts of frequent flier miles on the one or two airlines. By default, then the frequent flier miles quickly accumulate in one frequent flyer program therefore enabling the frequent flyer to have free flights sooner.Airports typically have one or two airlines that are the largest or that have the most flights that arrive or depart from that airport.A frequent flier that travels for business will typically use those airlines because they provide the most options to fit the schedule they need to either fly out or fly home (for example in Dallas, American Airlines would be the choice at the DFW International Airport, while in Atlanta it would be Delta). Since the business frequent flier will be able to get reimbursed for the cost of their flight from their employer, the price of the flight, while important, will many times be a secondary concern. Most companies will have a travel policy that will provide guidelines on the costs that an employee (business frequent flier) can pay for a flight.Additionally, the frequent flier that travels for leisure will try to pay for their flight using their frequent flier miles that they have earned/accrued. If they do not have enough to exchange (a domestic flight is will typically cost 25,000 miles from the freq flier account) then a leisure frequent flier will probably try to balance a low price flight with the schedule that they are trying to achieve.
