Shells naturally start to lose color when the animal inside is gone. Exposing them to light will often cause the colors to fade faster. Seashell collectors keep their collections in cabinets or display cases that are dark until opened for viewing.

Some seashells turn gray because all the calcium has drained put of it over the years. The reason it does that is because the creature that lives inside it provides the calcium and when it gets to big and moves out, the shell is lacking the calcium it needs in order to keep its form and color.

Seashells are made by animals called gastropods. The animal builds the shell around it's soft body as protection. The colors come from different minerals.
