The Nazis continued acting severly more inhumane because to not do so would suggest they were wrong to do the acts they had previously done. In the Milgram experiment, participants wanted to continue because to stop would be to suggest the lower severity electric shocks was wrong to do, therby putting them in a complicated moral situation. In other words, its the attempt to maintain dignity by following through.
