First, they are adopted by the police when they are puppies, then as they grow, they will undergo TRAINING, they will get used to sniffing out drugs, like officers give K-9s different substances of drugs for they to memorize, later they will hide a conceal SAME substance in a Car, if the dog sniff it out, most likely they will stop or bark. Like missing persons, dogs are used to sniff the children's clothing from where they disappear, because they were trained to do that. Hope This Helps :)
They're trained (from puppies) to recognise human scent. When tracking, they 'lock on' to the strongest scent.
They use them to smell out drugs or/and alcohol. They mostly use German Shepards. Hope i answered it good enough.
By following the criminal's scent (smell).

The police often use dogs to track down criminals, as well as searching for illegal substances. There have also been reports of attempts at training monkeys, rats, cats and pigs for Police use, but these have not been confirmed.
They are generally referred to as K-9 units or K-9 police dogs.
At home they can have any pets, but on the force many police forces use dogs to catch criminals
Yes due to its odor
To me, I think that dogs have a better sense of smell. That's why policemen use dogs to track criminals.
The police can track criminals that they are chasing even at night because of the amount of heat that the criminal is emitting.
In the 1880s, police caught criminals through a combination of detective work, informants, eyewitnesses, and physical evidence. They relied on developing clues and following up leads to track down suspects and gather evidence for prosecution. Police also used wanted posters, rewards, and community cooperation to apprehend criminals.
Not much,But Many Police Orginizations Use K-9's To Track The Villian/Robber.
because police dogs are trained to bite, tear, scare, and hurt, while police just scare and hurt.
Very well. That's why they're used as police dogs.
Dogs help a variety of people. They are still used to help herd sheep. They keep lonely people company. They are often used to guide the blind. They are used as guard dogs, to keep out thieves, and they are used by police to help track down criminals or missing persons. Some dogs are trained to find illegal drugs, by scent. So dogs have many uses for many people.
