It requires special equipment, and legally, a license to handle refrigerants.

I'm not being mean. If you are talking about a window AC, you simply can't without having brazing equipment and the skill to use it, plus about $3000 of other equipment to recycle the refrigerant.

For a central unit, if you are low on freon, you have a leak, and that must be fixed. Simply adding freon to a damaged system will accomplish nothing.

On cost alone, depending on how much you value AC, you are much better off having AC guys come out.
