    • Use (g) for gaseous substances.
    • Use (s) for solids.
    • Use (l) for liquids.
    • Use (aq) for species in solution in water.
    • Write the state of matter immediately following the formula of the substance it describes.
  3. Indicate the states of matter of the reactants and products.

To balance a chemical equation is to modify at least one part of one side of a chemical equation so that eachchemical is equal on one side to the other.

To put this into perspective look at the unbalanced equation Fe + Cl2 → FeCl3.

If you check both sides and count you should find there's 1Fe on each side but 2Cl on one side and 3 on another. So to make sense, this must be balanced. To balance, you must make the sides equal by identifying what is not equal and making them equal.

So for the Cl2, the LCM of 3 and 2 is 6 so you should add another two Cl2 under. Add one more FeCl3 under.

Fe + Cl2 → FeCl3

However, because 2FeCl3 has iron, there is 2Fe on that side so what you must do to one side has to be done to the other (to make them equal). So you then double the Fe on the other side too.

Now check both sides to see if they're equal. And you usually will find at this point that they are! So all you have to do is add them up accurately paying attention to numbers; multiplication.

You will arrive at your final answer; in this case it is:
