Someone might say "just use your fingers". But I do not recommend that. Dogs bite (even people they love if they get annoying enough - how would you like someone shoving a finger in your mouth?). Fingers also cannot reach the tiny gaps in between teeth.
If you do not wish to use a toothbrush, you can buy dental chews. These chews are given to your dog just like a normal treat. They contain peppermint extract and some of the same ingredients found in dog toothpaste. The dog will effectively brush his/her own teeth by gnawing away at the dental stick.
You can also give your dog a bone, a strong one (ask a butcher). Bones do a similar job to dental sticks but without the added benefit of containing dental health ingredients.
