If you want to become a member of parliament you have to have certain requirement.

· You must be 18 or older

· You must be a citizen of the UK, a commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland

· You must get at least 10 votes from the place she plans to run in

· You must deposit 500 pounds. This is to stop people who are just doing it for a laugh so you only get it back if you get at least 5 per cent of the vote.

They get elected. Usually that person is a 'candidate' for a political party (and thus chosen by the local branch of that party), though occasionally independent candidates put themselves up for election. In the UK there will be a General Election within the next year, because by law we have to have elections every 5 years or sooner, and the last General Election was 4 years ago.

At a general election, all constituencies become vacant and a Member of Parliament is elected for each from a list of candidates standing for election. General elections happen every five years. If an MP dies or retires, a by-election is held in that constituency to find a new MP for that area
