Depending on the type of smudge pot you are trying to light, techniques vary. Assuming that you are using an old grove heater with a crude oil, e.g. diesel fuel, you would locate the wick (wood base in most cases) inside and near the center of the fuel well. Once you locate this and ensure your heater is filled up with fuel to the appropriate line, light the wick with a grill lighter or other long stemmed flame source. It may be necessary to bundle up some old newspaper and dip the tip into some diesel fuel and light that and then try to position it in such a way as to apply the flame on the wick portion. You will know when it starts to burn because the initial stage consists of flames sometimes coming out of the top of the exhaust and high heat. Be sure to check the chokes on the burner as well to ensure adequate ventilation for combustion. And be careful.
