When you first go to the farm, the square the avatar is standing on is the one to delete and then place items to hold it in place - a lot of people line the edge of the square with hay bales to get started, you can always change it to other things later. If the avatar moves and you are not sure, just reload the page to check. It makes an amazing difference to working on the farm and the time it takes you to do things. Of course, as your farm enlarges you will need to reposition this holding square.
