For a fireplace, you should have a flashlight, and a pair of safety glasses (you WILL get soot in your face the first time). Kneel, lean over, shine the light up the chimney. You should see a rectangular metal plate- that is the damper. Usually has a handle that has notches on one side. Move the handle so that the notches are clear of the frame, and push up on the handle- damper should swing open. Hook the notches on the frame so that the damper STAYS open. Now use the flashlight to check for any foreign material (leaves, dead birds, animal nests) that may have been sitting there- they need to be removed before using the fireplace. A metal chimney cap will keep that stuff out. Now go wash your hands. And probably, your face.
A top damper or cap damper is a metal spring door placed at the top of the chimney with a long metal chain that allows one to open and close the damper from the fire place.
There should be a lever somewhere on the duct near the furnace. If it is open, the lever will be parallel to the duct. If the damper is closed, it will be perpendicular to the duct.
Shut and Open
When you use the fireplace, the damper should be open all the way. If not, you probably will not get enough updraft and your house will fill up with smoke...not a good thing. When it is not in use, the damper should be closed...otherwise you will lose a lot of heat up the chimney.
On mine if you turn the nob clockwise, that openes the damper. If you trun the now counter clockwise that closes the damper. Yours may be different. Let me think. Did you have anything in your stocking this morning?
When the fire is burning, until the ashes are cold. The damper should be open at these times.
yes
Your chimney damper is open
Damper is a simple bread made from flour, water and salt and cooked over an open campfire. The flour was grown in the fields, and water was collected from wells.
The purpose of the fireplace damper is to keep the outside elements, outside. The damper is opened only when there is a fire in the fireplace.
Is this referring to a zone system damper?
AKA, crank pulley damper, crankshaft damper, torsional damper, or vibration damper.
