If you are trying to create a desktop shortcut of a program you have installed:
1. Find the program that you want to create the shortcut for.
2. Right click the icon and hover over: 'send to'
3. A new menu will drop down to the right; click: 'desktop (create shortcut)'
4. A working desktop icon will be placed for you.
An alternate method to creating a desktop shortcut:
1. Go to your desktop.
2. Right click on an empty space and hover over: 'new'
3. Click: 'shortcut'
4. A window will appear asking you to locate the program on your computer.
5. Follow the instructions to locate the program, and then name the shortcut.
6. A shortcut will placed on the desktop for you.
Find the program's icon in explorer, right click on it, then select send to, then desktop (create shortcut). Done

A .desktop file is a plaintext configuration file. What it does is basically tell the desktop environment to display an icon and to launch a program when it is clicked on. It is the Windows equivalent of a shortcut. They can be created are manually by a user, or by the installer for a program.
A virtual desktop is a type of program that allows a user to have more information on their desktop in a smaller amount of space. There are different ways to use or access the virtual desktop. The virtual desktop may be shown by an icon on the main desktop. It may also be hidden in the taskbar as a running application. A user only needs to click on the appropriate icon to select the virtual desktop. A virtual desktop is only available to use if a person has downloaded the appropriate software
Go into the Applications folder. All the user programs will be in there.
Once a program has been downloaded and install, it will not do anything until the user 'runs' the program. For instance, by clicking on the icon for Mahjongg, the game will open on the desktop and is ready for the game to begin (run).
1. if you click on the desktop icon, its a ref pointer to the executable file of the application which is stored in the harddisk programm files. click on icon initiates the pointer to executable file which start running and application starts up. 2.give the path where the executable file is tored and type all on run command it will trigger the appliaction.
It all depends on the user has put on the desktop. Usually, you will see My Computer, Recycle Bin and many My Documents.

A user can use the "X" icon on the upper-right corner of the application window, press Alt+F4 in most applications, press Alt, Space, C to close the application via the system menu, or right-click on the program's icon in the taskbar and choose Close.
Right click desktop background, highlight new, left click folder. New folder icon shows on desktop, now just name it what you like, if you don't it will just say, new folder under the icon. BTW, if you have multiple user accounts set up for the computer, this process should be done by/in the Administrator account to be assessable by all users/accounts. Alternate: Log on as Administrator: Add the icon to C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Desktop.
