Contrary to a lot of nonsense circulating about lucid dreaming, there is no universally dependable method of recognizing that you are dreaming. Techniques such as trying to read printed material or looking into a mirror might work for some individuals but not for others, because each individual's subconscious mind produces unique dream images. On the other hand, if you have enough awareness to ask yourself, "am I dreaming," the chances are that you have gained some level of lucidity. At that point, it may be possible to determine whether events are taking place that could not occur in reality, and thereby realize that a dream is in process.
