Remove glove compartment by removing screws on each side. The really weird part is that you need to cut and disregard the metal bracket that is behind the glove box to get at the filter. Replace the box. Removing the bracket has no effect.

I have a 2003 (may be the same for your 2006) and the cabin filter is behind the glove compartment. I had to remove the glove compartment and then I could get to the cabin filter to replace it. Kind of hard to get to, but I was able to do it myself.

The HVAC pollen filter blocks dust/debris that enters the vehicles cabin from the outside air. Also blocks particles that are recirculated from inside the cabin when changed from fresh air to recirculate. Another way you would know to replace the filter is if there is an odor from the dash vents or if the air from the dash vents is weak. Just like the filter on a homes HVAC system.
