Êtes vous
"Êtes-vous" (with a hyphen) is a correct way of asking the question, if you are speaking to more than one person or somebody that you have a more formal relationship with. But in a more casual conversation, you would probably use "tu es."
Please note that neither of these forms can stand alone -- that is, they can only be used as a part of a question like "are you ready," "are you American," etc. If you wanted to say something like "I'm hungry. Are you?" you would use "et toi?" (casual) or "et vous?" (formal).
Tu es or vous êtes is you are; nous sommesis we are; ils sont or elles sont is they are.
Tu es: For someone familair Vous êtes: For someone that's not familiar to you and/or your elder
you are = tu es (informal, friends, family, children) (pronounce too eh) you are = vous êtes (formal) (pronounce vooz ett)
