Although it is actually the presence of a male rabbit that will cause a female to come into season - within a very short space of time- female rabbits still have a sex drive, and will mount each other, if more than one are kept together, and theywill pluck their own fur and make a nest, even if kept alone. This happens particularly in the Spring and warmer weather.
Some rabbits can nest the same day they conceive where others may not nest AT ALL.
Usually though, a rabbit will build a fur nest just moments before giving birth.
If you have a rabbit that hasn't built a nest before having her babies, you can turn her over and pull fur out from the stomach, making sure you do this around the nipples especially as it will help allow the kits to find the milk. This wont hurt her as the hormones during labor will help the hair to come out easily and they usually do this themselves anyway.
You know if your female rabbit is nesting because she pulls out her hair to make a nest for her baby's. Hope that helps you. misscocopops
