Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Don't freak out when I say this, because this particular virus can be spread without sexual contact. Many people are affected by the herpes virus, and because it is a virus, it cannot be cured. There are ways to treat them, many stores sell over the counter products to help reduce the pain and swelling. DO NOT BITE THE SORE, no matter how bad it may hurt. Apply lip balm whenever possible to prevent your lips from chapping, and refrain from touching the area infected.

Abreva can be effective, or your doctor can prescribe anti-viral medication such as acyclovir, valcyclovir, or famcyclovir. In addition, you can get topical creams and ointments from your local pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist for recommendations.

Common cold sores are caused by a benign form of Herpes virus (Herpes simplex virus or HSV1). Antibiotics are not effective since they are for killing bacteria only.

Cold sores can be treated with over the counter medications which basically simply dry out the cold sore and try to minimize the duration of the herpes virus. Tricks such as sunlight, lemon juice, and zap creams are commonly used to treat the virus but there is no cure and no medicine will cut the outbreak completely.

How can you prevent somebody else from getting cold sore?

Cold sores are very contagious during a break out. If you have a visible cold sore then don't share things like utensils or cups when you have a break out. You also shouldn't be kissing any one (specially children) on or around the mouth until the cold sore has completely gone away. You should also know cold sores can also be spread during oral sex. If you give some one oral sex while you have a vsible cold sore you could pass it to your partner's genitals. It's safer to do those things in between break outs or when you have no signs or symptoms of a cold sore.
