If you need to turn off the light because it is screwing up your smog check, you can disconnect and then reconnect the battery (reseting the computer and turning off the light). The advice given to me was: "After you reset the computer, drive for 25 miles".
In my experience the light always comes back on within 25 miles.
For the purposes of passing your smog check, just head over there right after you set the light off. (Make sure your Idleing smooth)
Note* This advice is for those who:
1. Know why their light is on, putting off repairs, or don't care.
2. Have scensor issues and several mechanics and can't get the light to stay off!
3. Are not legitimatley failing the smog check. Turning off the light won't help those who are.
