Hemingway uses the literary technique of "compression" in the dialog between the man and woman. The characters never quite say what they really think, and the reader has to work out the subject of their conversation from the context of what they actually do say.

How does Hemingway create a detached tone?

In his writing he provided detached descriptions of action, using simple nouns and verbs to capture scenes percisley. By doing so he avoided describing his characters emotions and thoughts directly. Instead of providing the reader with just the experience, he made it approximate the experience as closely as possible. Hemingway believed a writer could treat a subject honestly only if the writer was deeply observing the subject. Without that knowledge the writers work would be bad because the reader would know the authors lack of knowledge. Hemingway believed an author writing about a familiar subject is able to write sparingly and eliminate bad detail from the piece without sacrificing the voice of authority. This is why he used simple, direct language.
