Genetically modified works by, firstly you have to identify a particular characteristic such as herbicide resistance. Then you get a gene which may come from a completely different organism, which is then inserted into some DNA from a plant cell, and that gives it trait. And that means for example if you spray some weed killer. The genetically modified crops would be unaffected. Plants can also be modified for pest resistance.

Scientists (biotechnologists and biochemists) have altered the DNA structure (genetic material) of crops (genetic engineering) by identifying the desirable features from one particular species, and then cutting by a restriction enzyme, and then inserting desirable trait into the other species so the GM crops and foods can reproduce with the desirable features. These desirable features could be genes that code for resistance to disease, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi (or mould) on the food or crop, or improving the taste of the food or crop by selecting the best gene for good taste, or even having a good effect on health, such as humans' immune system being boosted from a particular gene that fights diseases, and etc.

While many claim that science shows GMO foods to be perfecty safe and have no harmful effects, others believe they can be harmful, possibly causing sterility and other health issues. The truth appears to be that the effects of GMOs on the human body are not known.

How do scientists genetically modify watermelons?

Most of the food plants we use now are 'genetically modified' in the way of improving the amount of food able to be grown, the disease resistances of the plant, the quality and consistency of the food grown - but then farmers have been doing this type of work for hundreds of years, the scientists have only recently taken up the habit
