It was a completely new music style compared to the pop, synthetic 80s material. The lyrics weren't about dancing, dating/boys, or the happy side of life in general.

There was an immediate transition from people like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna to groups like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Their lyrics had an extreme depth, intensity, and edgy emotion; they took music to a different, rawer level than the singers of the 80s did.

It can express rebellion because of what the person is singing about... Since contemporary music is a form of expressing yourself, it really depends what the artist is saying in the song. But contemporary music can also express happiness, anger, sadness etc. Because it is a way of venting your feelings.. But it doesn't nessesarily ALWAYS express rebellion
