It looks like a caterpillar so people don't eat it because Caterpillars don't taste like Chicken, or Bacon. I'd know!

Yes, they survive- as long as it's in a good place and well-protected from wind, rain and harsh temperatures. If they couldn't survive we simply wouldn't have any more caterpillars the following spring!

So, yes, they appear to live through low temperatures. However, they would not likely survive in below-freezing conditions.
