It is very very challenging and it makes you think more than you can imagine!
That's not a good description. But in truth, if you are participating, I would recommend a lot of time spent getting down pat everything you are going to be doing. It is very unlikely that I have ever been to yours and there is no specification involved so you are on your own. On second thought, ask a teacher or somone you know that has done it; maybe they can give you a heads up on what to do, study, etc.
Also, notice. It is on the state level, and is a science olympiad. Now, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that this probably won't be a breeze for you. In the end, the answer would have to be yes, it is hard enough that you have to care and put a truckload of effort into it to win.

Not nessesarily. Write It Do It is my event this year and even though we made it to Nationals, I never placed, so you can say its hard, but it depends on the person.
How do schools participate in Science Olympiad?
They have an assigned lead teacher who coordinates the efforts to join the Science Olympiad competitions, usually through representing the school, and with conjoined efforts with the principle, the school could go to the Science Olympiad representative of the school's region, and hopefully sign up and be able to participate within the following school year to join the Science Olympiad Competitions.
