Galileo challenged the Church's authority on scientific matters, showing with a few simple experiments how the Church's teachings were wrong on subjects such as physics. He got in a lot of trouble over that, and the relationship between science and the Church has been rocky ever since.

Today in the United States there is a conflict between scientists who support the theory of evolution and the people who believe that God created the world exactly how it is described in The Bible. This has caused a headache for textbook manufacturers who sometimes have to deal with local rejections of nationally produced textbooks.

There has been a raging debate in the United States about whether abortions should be legal. Many religions believe that abortions are murder, and that leads to conflicts around women's health clinics and the availability of abortions and the consequences of illegal abortions. Millions of lives are at stake, both unborn and the mothers involved.

Fertility treatments cause controversy as sometimes fertilized eggs are destroyed in the process. Certain religions believe that each fertilized egg should have equal civil and human rights as a fully born person.

Euthanasia has been happening since the dawn of time but recent medical developments allow people to continue to be alive when otherwise they would die. How far does one go with heroic and expensive medical treatments to save one's life? Is the quality of that person's life worth all the medical intervention? Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not but it's hard to know as people's values vary around that issue. Some feel all human life is worth every means possible to save it; some patients do not want the medical treatments and would rather die.
