I believe you are referring to a film called the Killers, not the Killing. It was loosely based on a short story by Ernest Hemingway. In the story, the lead character was a Boxer called Ole Johnson ( Ole is a prename does not mean ( Old like Ol" smokey) The Hollywood transformation turned the lead character into a racing driver, but that was not the primary plot. Had little to do with auto racing, much with motel-room violence.
