An element is the most basic unit of all matter. A compound is made up of two or more elements. An element can be found on the Periodic Table while a compound is made up of two or more of those elements. Another difference is that elements in groups 1 through 17 all have charges, only elements in group 18 do not have charges because their outter electron shells have been filled. Compounds do not have a charge because they have formed ionic or covalent bonds which either transfers or shares valence electrons in order to fill these outter shells. ex) Boron is an element in group 13 and is written like this B3+ Boron has a charge of 3+ ex) Dihydrogen monooxide (also know as water) is contains two elements Hydrogen and oxygen and has no charge. This is written like this H2O

A pure element is a substance that is just by itself, such as Oxygen or O2 A compound has more than one element in it, such as Water or H2O
