In order to spend money and make change, math is used.

For example, if you have only 11 dollars (or 11 pounds), you cannot buy 3 items that cost $4 (or £4) each.

If you want to buy something that costs $19 (or £19) and you have two ($10 or £10) bills, you need to use addition to find out that 10+10=20.

More complicated uses would be to calculate taxes on your purchase:

  • $19.00 plus 6% tax will be $19 + $1.14 = $20.14
  • £20 + 1.14% tax = £22.80

Or to calculate how much you should leave as a tip for your waitress at a restaurant:

Bill is $36.85 and you tip 20 percent - leave $7.37 extra, or a total of $44.22
